چکیده

In this paper we study the effects of negative Poisson’s ratios on elastic problems containing singularities. Materials with a negative Poisson’s ratio are termed auxetic. We present a brief review of such materials. The elasticity problem of a bimateral wedge is presented, then two particular cases of this problem are investigated: the free-edge problem and the interface crack problem. We study the effect on the stress singularity due to one portion of the bimaterial becoming auxetic. We find that the auxetic material has a significant effect on the singularity order, even causing the singularity to vanish for certain values of the elastic constants. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. From Geometric Transformations to Auxetic Metamaterials

The paper introduces a new alternative towards fabrication of auxetic metamaterials (materials with negative Poisson’s ratio) controlled by geometric transformations. These transformations are derived from the theory of small (infinitesimal) elastic deformation superimposed on finite elastic deformations. By using this theory, a cylindrical region filled with initial deformed foam is transforme...

Dimpled elastic sheets: a new class of non-porous negative Poisson’s ratio materials

In this study, we report a novel periodic material with negative Poisson's ratio (also called auxetic materials) fabricated by denting spherical dimples in an elastic flat sheet. While previously reported auxetic materials are either porous or comprise at least two phases, the material proposed here is non-porous and made of a homogeneous elastic sheet. Importantly, the auxetic behavior is indu...

Reduction of free-edge stress intensities in anisotropic bimaterials

We investigate the free-edge stresses in anisotropic bimaterials through the use of the free-edge stress intensity factor, Kf . This requires a determination of the singularity order at the free-surface as well as a calculation of the near-field stresses. We determine the order of the singularity for arbitrary free-surface orientation of the upper material using an eigenvalue analysis for aniso...

Bridged interface cracks in anisotropic bimaterials

The bonding strength between dissimilar materials in composites is often relatively weak. Interface debonding and cracking are of common occurrence. As an e€ ective method to minimize such failures, ® bre stitching is used to enhance the bonding strength when joining layers in polymer composites. With the presence of the reinforcing ® bre, the overall elastic response for each component of the ...
